Healthy Pregnancy & Diabetes – 5 Guides

Among diabetic pregnant women, the most common problem when it comes to their baby’s health is the condition called “macrosomia” or having a baby with large body. This is because the blood of the mother with diabetes is interchanged with that of the baby inside the womb. As a result, the baby will produce insulin to be able to glucose and this will lead to fat deposits, which causes the baby to grown larger compared to the regular ones.

What you can do

For a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, it is ideal to maintain an appropriate weight gain, average consumption of various foods from different food groups, timely and
prescribed vitamin and mineral supplementation, and lots of fluid intake. Sweets and fats should also be kept to a minimum level of consumption. The following are just
some of the guidelines that pregnant women with diabetes can use to achieve healthy pregnancy despite the chronic disease:

1. Follow the appropriate meal plan religiously.

More than ever, pregnant women should pay attention to what they eat and their eating patterns in general. This is very important because this stage—pregnancy itself—requires strict control of blood glucose levels in order to ensure that both the mother and baby are getting the right amount of key nutrients needed. In coming up with the right diet plan, it is best to seek the help of diabetes educator or a licensed dietitian to create the necessary adjustments needed to accommodate the needs not only of the fetus inside the womb but of the mother as well. In your meal plan,
take note of calorie, carbohydrates and protein requirements every day because these will help you maintain normal blood glucose levels.

2. Regular Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose or SMBG.

Experts say that the only way to tell if the woman is successful in controlling her blood glucose is by monitor their levels by themselves regularly. Since being pregnant is a sensitive condition, soon to be mothers should monitor their blood glucose levels more frequently. Ideally, SMBG should be monitored four to 10 times a day.

3. Knowledge in administering insulin injections and adjusting the doses based on the results of SMBG.

Sufficient supply of insulin is very crucial for pregnant women so they must know how to administer insulin injections by themselves in case no one is around when they need it. They should also ask from their physician how to adjust the doses of insulin after they are through with the SBMG. Knowing how to adjust the doses of insulin needed is very important to ensure that the body’s supply of insulin is stable.

4. Treating or controlling hypoglycemia.

Pregnant women who are diabetics are more prone to hypoglycemia because of the hormonal changes in their body. Although studies show that there are no know effects of hypoglycemia in the baby, it is best to control or treat it as soon as possible so the soon to be mom won’t be having troubles during the course of conception.

5. Maintaining regular set of exercise or physical activities.

This is also very important for pregnant women with diabetes because through this they can reduce the risk of hypoglycemia as well as being overweight. Since it is hard for pregnant women to do strenuous workouts, it is best to maintain the hobby of having light exercises that will keep the body moving.

Can You Have a Healthy Pregnancy With Diabetes?

Having a healthy pregnancy with diabetes can really be a dream with many, but it is possible and the purpose of this article is to establish the claim. Pregnancy period, otherwise known as gestational period, covers the growth of baby in the uterus from fertilization until birth. It also includes the conception and formulation of a plan or idea in the mind about the pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is defined as that discovered when you are pregnant. Getting pregnant by ignoring the gestational diabetes signs implies many additional increased risks like miscarriage, stillbirth and birth defects with your baby. However, if you pay constant care before conception, you can avoid many risks. Normal pregnancy can reduce insulin sensitivity because of diabetogenic effects of placental hormones. This effect is maximal in the late second and third trimesters.

There are many cases of women with pre-acquired diabetes. With such condition, the mother should be cautious against diabetic complications that may arise when she gets pregnant. This will reduce the risk of birth defects for babies. Also it will be safe for you if you are decided to control your pre-acquired diabetes as First Aid action before you get pregnant. With this awareness, you can prevent serious birth defects in the brain and spinal cord. Nowadays, most women of child bearing age can realistically expect motherhood for healthy children with intensive glycemic control.

Bad effects of pregnancy with diabetes: Being pregnant and diabetic can create problems to the mother and fetus. If you ignore the control of blood glucose in general, it may lead to menstrual problems and difficulty in conceiving. If you are pregnant, that condition itself worsens your diabetic control and causes certain complications to develop in your body. Maternal diabetes is also hazardous for the fetus with increased risk and major congenital malformations.

Plan yourself for healthy pregnancy: To prevent abortion and congenital malformations of diabetic mothers, awareness program and proper education should begin before conception. There are no specific contraceptive methods, but you can have treatment for your gestational diabetes. Whenever you achieve a stable sugar control, the contraception can be discounted and hence, you are safe to get pregnant. Gestational diabetes risks for the mother and the baby should be avoided at any cost. For this simple reason, you need not go a long way worrying with anxiety for healthy pregnancy.

Tips to have healthy pregnancy with diabetes:

Careful blood glucose monitoring and proper treatment in advance can ensure you a healthy baby when you conceive.
If you are taking oral medications, you need a switch over to insulin before and after pregnancy.
If you are already a declared diabetic, you need to consult your doctor and plan accordingly for healthy pregnancy.
Careful planning and preconception care alone can allow the diabetic woman to have a problem free and healthy pregnancy.
Having gestational diabetes diet plan with multivitamin and folic acid can ensure you a healthy pregnancy.

Once you control your diabetes, you can make yourself fit for pregnancy. If you want to be hundred percent safe in this regard, you should know the description of foods to eat AND foods to avoid to control diabetes for a healthy pregnancy.

People young and old suffering from diabetes are most often than not faced with concerns whether they can eat the same food and have the indulgences they used to have before the onset of this disease. While it is true that you don’t have to deprive yourself the sugar you love all the time, it is also a fact that you have to best manage your blood sugar levels by eating healthy so that you don’t have to suffer the consequences of your disease.

While some diabetics opt for saying lines like, “It doesn’t hurt to take a few bites of this pastry that I haven’t had for a long time”, the same patients end up having seconds of the indulgences they so missed that the end up paying the price. You have to realize that the only way for you to keep your blood sugar levels within the normal range is to follow a diet plan. Once you have done that, it will be okay to indulge yourself once in a while with a small treat.

If you have never tried to eat something that is healthy, or, something that is well-balanced for your diabetes management, it will be a challenging transition for you to give up the lifestyle you are used to and needless to say the diet you love. The first step will always be the most difficult. However, as hard as they may seem, they are essential to get you started. It is advisable to try out these alternatives that can help you create a diet plan of your own.

Eating starches such as cereals, bread and vegetables rich in starchy compounds can go a long way. Target a diet which is good for about six servings of starch in a day. Good examples of these would include breakfast cereals with low fat milk or bread and jello. Crops like corn and legumes are also abundant in starches that are very filling.

Fruits are also essential in a diabetic diet. Make sure to have about four or five servings of these to snack on along the way. Vitamin C found in fruits are also great for a diabetic patient to heal diabetic ulcers and other lesions. Vitamin C can also be found in raw vegetables as well.

Fibers are also important. Dietary fibers are found in fruits and vegetables as well as legumes and beans. Include a salad on your diet without the fatty dressing. This will help slow down the absorption of glucose thus, lowering your blood sugar. These even sweep out the toxins in your body by cleaning out your digestive system.

Just because you should stay away from unhealthy diet doesn’t mean you have to stay away from sugar. This is a common misconception among diabetic clients. Sugars are still good when you eat them in moderation. It is good to incorporate your favorite delights in your diet twice a week to satisfy your sweet cravings. These confections will also serve as reward when you have done a good job of controlling your diet. Never deprive yourself from the things you like. For as long as you flex your discipline muscles, it is okay to have sweets from time to time. Make sure to consult with your dietitian to help you with your choices. Eat healthy to live a healthy life.

This video was made to tell a little bit about how Chef Dina Knight got started on a path to health and wellness, what her initial inspirations were, how she saw the differences between sick care and wellness. This video is a personal look into her life that so many other people are experiencing on a daily basis with their loved ones in the hospital, sick or dying of a preventable “lifestyle” disease. Heart Disease, Diabetes and obesity affect 1 out of every 2 people in the US, it’s time we made a change and started seeing how what we eat, how we live, and what we think will either lead us down a path towards health and wellness or that we can literally dig our own graves with our forks. This is part one of a several part interview of how she ended up with an amazing weight loss of over 115lbs. We hope you enjoy it, please pass this onto a friend, neighbor or loved one who you think might benefit from hearing this message and be sure and subscribe for future videos, also please visit the websites and join our mailing list so we can keep in touch. Thanks!
