You are worried about carbs cause you are diabetic, so focus on that and try to distribute your carbs throughout the day with 3/10 in the morning, 3/10 for lunch, 3/10 for dinner and 1/10 as a night time snack.
Even better go see a dietitian and the two of you can go over this for real and work out a meal plan for you. Good luck

I really want dessert! Gestational diabetes..what can I have instead? ?

I am craving ice cream or a bowl of cocoa crispies but my doc is checking me on mon for gestational diabetes because of glucose in my urine. I am trying to follow a diabetic diet until I get the results but it is so hard! I cannot have deli meat or artificial sweetener so that really limits me, plus I do not like a lot of dairy. I have been eating only lean meat, green low starch veggies and very small portions of grains and almonds and some fruit but I am starving! Plus I really crave sweets. Any suggestions?
FYI- I am not usually overweight but as of now I am 36weeks prego and am always hungry now that I am not eating as many carbs, what do diabetics eat that I can actually have without posing risk to my baby?

I had GD too, it’s really tough.

What your other responders don’t realize is that you’re not supposed to have sugar substitutes while you’re pregnant. So the sugar free candy and hot cocoa is a no-no.

Eating less will get much easier after a while. If you can stick to the new diet for a couple of weeks, then it won’t bother you as much.

Here’s what I did, and it worked out really well. You need to start exercising. Because every time you exercise, you get to have extra carbs. And with a little experimentation you can figure out exactly how much extra you can have.

I would walk 2 miles. 1 mile to the store to buy a Snickers bar, and 1 mile back. And when I got back, I got the candy bar. The snickers bar was the better choice because it has nuts in it, which will help keep your blood sugars more level.

I got to the point where I would walk every other day. I wouldn’t have a snickers bar every time of course, but I did have more than a few during that time :o )

Even with the candy, the exercise made me lose weight while I was in my last trimester. It actually started to make my GD better to the point I could eat a little more the rest of the time too. And most women get it worse just before the baby is born, not better.

confused about gestational diabetes counting carbs diet!?

This is so confusing. I need to know if this is alright. I just started my gestational diabetes low-carb diet. My three meals a day range from 30-45g of carbs while my three snacks range from 15-30g of carbs. I don’t want to keep eating just turkey sandwiches and fruits and vegetables. Would it be ok if I ate the following, as long as it is within carbohydrate guidelines?

For example ..
(3) chicken strips from Sheetz w/ nacho cheese – 26g carbs, no sugar
Grilled chicken wrap from Sheetz w/ cheddar cheese, cooked peppers & onions, bacon, & tomatoes – 31g carbs, 3g sugars
McChicken from McDonald’s w/o the bun, mayo, & lettuce (just the plain chicken patty) – 10g carbs

Can I eat this stuff (obviously not at the same meal or anything) since it’s within the carb guidelines I am supposed to follow?

Also .. some more examples .. not that I want to eat this stuff daily or anything, just using these as examples ..
Low Carb Options (each under 10g* of carbs):
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich* • (3g)
• Low Carb DOUBLE WHOPPER® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (5g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich* • (1g)
• Low Carb WHOPPER JR.® Sandwich w/ cheese* • (2g)
• Low Carb BK™ Double Stacker Sandwich* (5g)
• Low Carb BK™ Triple Stacker Sandwich* (6g)
• Low Carb BK™ Quad Stacker Sandwich* (6g)
** ALL WITHOUT THE BUN **

My numbers weren’t that bad they said, they didn’t give me exacts though, I’m going to ask them next time I go in. I’m not asking you to verify if my diet is good — I just want to know if I am counting carbs for a diabetic diet could I eat this stuff since the carbs are within guidelines? Obviously not for every meal every day, but maybe one meal a week or something like that.

Just to add — my levels today were -
Fasting – 81
1 hour after breakfast – 103
1 hour after lunch – 105
(didn’t have dinner yet .. and YES my doctor has me monitor ONE hour after a meal, not two!)
ok no need to lecture me on fast food alright i believe i clearly stated above that i do not eat this every day nor do i have any intentions on it i was just asking a simple question

I had gestational 3 years ago…
my numbers werent that bad either…..I only had to do diet as do u.
I would eat from Wendy’s a child’s meal and a side salad almost daily for lunch and I was fine…..
Actually the nutritionist had me try this and it worked fine….and sometimes I would sneak in a half of a choc chip muffin and it was still fine.
Take Care and good luck.
Sounds like ur doing great.

Diabetic Diet Plans?

My boyfriend of the past 8 months is diabetic and has been for 20 years. I am not in charge of the food we eat as I do all the cooking. I try to cook as healthy as possible … but need some tips on what is good and or bad for him. I do as much low fat good as possible … I try to find sugar free recipes for cakes and cookies – but has a real hard time finding them or the ingredients … where do you shop to get these things.

He wont eat it if it is boring and I dont think it should be … there has to be some hidden secret that I dont know about … on where to find good sugar free ingredients ?

What types of diet plans do you or someone you love follow.
I just want to make sure I am helping him with his condition …

There has to be more I can do with what I feed us ?

Please any help or suggestions is REALLY needed. Thank You.

People with diabetes can eat anything they want.
Yes, there are some choices that are better than others.
It’s not the sugar to worry about, it’s the carbs. We all need carbs and they are the only thing that raises blood sugar.
Get yourself a book with nutritional information and count carbs. Ask your Bf how many carbs he should eat each meal.
You don’t need to use artificial sugar in baking. It still has the carbs and generally tastes like garbage.
If you bake cookies, he should only have a small portion of carbs with his meal to make room for the cookies.
For instance :
Baked Chicken [ 0 carbs ]
Baked potato [30 carbs ]
green beans [about 5 carbs in a 1/2 cup serving ]
2 Rolls [ 60 carbs ]
That is a bit high.
If you change the two rolls into one, he still has room for cookies.
It’s all a trade off.
Perhaps you should both go to a dietitian to learn what is best.
Good luck.

Very Strict Diet Plan–Need Some Diverse Recipes?

I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and diabetes runs in my family. In conjunction with a new exercise routine, I’ve started a pretty strict diet plan with a nutritionist which cuts out most carbs and lowers my fat intake. I’m looking for recipes with low carbs and fat to spruce up my diet plan. I realize that if I can’t enjoy it, I won’t stick with it. Thanks!

Go to this website:

http://www.dlife.com/

It is geared towards diabetics and offers recipes, health information, etc. Hopefully you’ll find something there that helps you out (and some great recipes too).

Where can I find example menu for diabetics? How many carbs and calories for a man weight of 215lbs?

Have you not discussed this with a doctor or nurse? Do you have a blood glucose meter? You should.

I’m type 2; my doctor recommends 50 carbs per meal, three times a day. Best carbs are complex carbs (potatos and the like); avoid simple sugars (they’re traumatic to the system). At least the minimum daily of fiber (25 grms), more is better. Drink plenty of water. Veggies are good snacks; salad is a good filler when you feel hungry, for a snack. There are a lot of foods that used to be "forbidden," but now have low-carb versions — even ice cream. Take blood sugar reading mornings after you wake up. If below 72, drink a small glass of juice to bring your blood sugar up, then eat your morning meal.

Diabetic menu guide & calorie chart?

My mother is diabetic & has not been properly controlling her diet & is now have severe health problems. She’s not overweight, but really needs to change her eating habits & won’t do it as the doctor says. I feel that if I help her she will change them & hopefully live a little longer than the rate she’s going now (she’s only 47). Does anybody know of any websites with FREE diabetic eating guides or sample menus? She’s coming to stay with me & even if she doesn’t know it, I will be monitoring her health by preparing her food. I would really appriciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance!

Also, does anybody know of any website with a full calorie chart for everything (fruits, veg, burgers, fast food, etc)? That one is for me, I need to lose weight & cutting calories is the only thing that has worked for me, so I do not end up like my mother :) Thank you again

When I was diagnosed with diabetes I did the same thing. I thought the doctor was loony tunes. I didn’t feel sick I felt terrific.

Here is what my wife did. First get your mom a good glucometer. I recommend either One Touch Ultra or The Accu-Check Compact. She should test 3 X a day. Right when she gets up in the morning. Once before Lunch and once before Dinner. Force her to do this. Even poking her yourself if you have to.

Next, there are community semenairs, usually free or very lowcost for non-residents and generally through the park district, showing people how to eat properly and how to keep count of what they eat. Your mom needs training. Cook Books won’t do that.

Third, counting calaories for diabetics and for anybody is a misnomer. You and your mom need to keep track of her carbohydrate intake. Carbs convert to sugar in the blood stream. You can have a 1200 calaorie diet and still be consuiming 25 Carbs. NOT GOOD. Even non-diabetics should do both Maintain low Carb count and an average calorie count.

Her carb count, and yours, should be somewhere near 14 or less to maintain a good sugar level. You can count the carbs by looking at the packages. 1 Carb = 15G of Carbohydrates. Remember a Hamburger/Hot Dog bun may actually be 2 carbs as it is a top and a bottom. READ READ AND READ the Nutrition information label on each product you use.

Also MEASURE MEASURE AND MEASURE your food. That is a great way to maintain both calaroies and carbs.

The last thing I have for both of you actually is to eat three meals a day. The more times you eat the less food you take in. Do not skip meals. That is tantamount to overeating to compensate for missed nutirition.

I went on this diet in 2004 and lost over 100 pounds. Your mom, even tho she maintains her weight, should lose a few pounds to. She may find that if she reduces her weight even 10 pounds, that her Blood sugar will be lower.
