Life after gestational diabetes?

Hi,

Did you have gestational diabetes (GD) at any of your pregnancies?
Did you manage it with diet or insulin (or medication)?

If you had GD, please let me know your experience after labor. What happened to your GD following labor?

Did you become type II diabetic afterwards? If so, when and how? Is there anything you hope you would have done that could prevent it?

Last but not least? How is your baby you carried with GD now?

Please share your experience. Thanks a bunch.

I was diagnosed with GD during my second pregnancy. I had to self inject insulin.

I was told to expect one of two things. I could either have a very large baby (up to possibly 15 lbs.) or a small baby with an overwhelming amount of amniotic fluid. I actually gave birth to a nine lb. son (which was big for me) and had so much amniotic fluid it put stress on the baby and he had to be delivered a little early.

While I was pregnant, I was losing weight which made me very happy but the doctor insisted I eat more or else the baby would be born with a low IQ. So I ate, I am now the overweight mother of a 19 year old genius. (seriously).

The doctor said I would probably develop full blown diabetes in a few years after the pregnancy if I did not lose weight. He was right. I did. I should have starved myself but I didn’t.

I got diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes on Friday. I need to know what to eat till I see a nutritionist?

I am going out for a preplanned dinner date with my husband. he works 70 hours a week so we planned this quite a while ago. he told me to pick a restaurant I can eat at and he would find something but I don’t really know what to eat. I got a diabetic diet from the doctor but it isn’t for pregnant women. I am only allowed 6 oz of meat a day on this plan. It i just a guideline. I don’t have to follow it word for word but I don’t see a nutritionist till tomorrow morning. any suggestions would help.
meat is protein so you have to eat protein to counteract the carbs. you need to cut carbs not meat. I am asking for people who have gone out to dinner with it.

I currently have gestational diabetes and have been able to manage it with diet and exercise. I have eaten at Applebees and had the oriental chicken roll up and about half the fries that come with it. I have also gone to Red Lobster and had the king or snow crab, the mashed potatoes, one biscuit, and a caesar salad. I have eaten at Chipotle and had the burrito with chicken, black beans, rice, cheese, mild salsa, and sour cream or the burrito bowl with the same stuff and half a bag of the tortilla chips. I’ve gone to Noodles and Company and had the Med Salad and a three piece pot sticker. I can have a taco salad from anywhere…There’s lots of choices. My diet says 4 carb choices (up to 60 grams of carbs) 3 oz of protein and one fat choice (sour cream, salad dressing, etc) for lunch or dinner type meal. This is a guideline and your body may tolerate some stuff better than others. Get a portion of meat that is about the size of your palm, a carb like potatoes or rice that’s about 1/2-1 cup, veggies, a salad with dressing on the side, drink water or diet soda or tea with artificial sweetener, avoid fruit. If you want a desert, share it…NO HONEY!!

Try to walk around for about 15 minutes about one hour after you eat. I’ve done this and been fine with my sugars (they stay between 60-120 two hours after a meal). Have fun!!!

I really want dessert! Gestational diabetes..what can I have instead? ?

I am craving ice cream or a bowl of cocoa crispies but my doc is checking me on mon for gestational diabetes because of glucose in my urine. I am trying to follow a diabetic diet until I get the results but it is so hard! I cannot have deli meat or artificial sweetener so that really limits me, plus I do not like a lot of dairy. I have been eating only lean meat, green low starch veggies and very small portions of grains and almonds and some fruit but I am starving! Plus I really crave sweets. Any suggestions?
FYI- I am not usually overweight but as of now I am 36weeks prego and am always hungry now that I am not eating as many carbs, what do diabetics eat that I can actually have without posing risk to my baby?

I had GD too, it’s really tough.

What your other responders don’t realize is that you’re not supposed to have sugar substitutes while you’re pregnant. So the sugar free candy and hot cocoa is a no-no.

Eating less will get much easier after a while. If you can stick to the new diet for a couple of weeks, then it won’t bother you as much.

Here’s what I did, and it worked out really well. You need to start exercising. Because every time you exercise, you get to have extra carbs. And with a little experimentation you can figure out exactly how much extra you can have.

I would walk 2 miles. 1 mile to the store to buy a Snickers bar, and 1 mile back. And when I got back, I got the candy bar. The snickers bar was the better choice because it has nuts in it, which will help keep your blood sugars more level.

I got to the point where I would walk every other day. I wouldn’t have a snickers bar every time of course, but I did have more than a few during that time :o )

Even with the candy, the exercise made me lose weight while I was in my last trimester. It actually started to make my GD better to the point I could eat a little more the rest of the time too. And most women get it worse just before the baby is born, not better.

Possible gestational diabetes and so hungry-starving!!! Menus?

doc said eat what i normally do(3 meals),and only snack on bananas,2 slices of bread, rice,oj, because i failed my first 1 hour glucose test.going for the 2nd soon- the 3 hour..so i have to be on this diet for 3 days prior.then fast from 11 pm until the test is complete the next afternoon….
what i normally eat is pastas, breads, veggies and cereals, milk,TONS OF WATER,a vitamin everyday. and other various healthy foods.
my concern is,i have to follow this diet.i have been eating no carbs/much sugary stuff AT ALL NOW. but 1 bagel for breakfast with a little butter and milk and water in the a.m. midmoring snack- a banana.
for lunch it is followed with a prenatal vitamin and water with a plain burger on a plate with no bread or chicken tenders by purdue…then later for a snack, i had a cucumber, then after that i was still starving,so i cut up a bowl of lettuce and ate that! and thank god its almost dinner time!! chicken drumsticks with a veggie and dont know what else… my point is, i am trying to lower my blood sugar so i have a healthy baby, but also want to pass my next test..
i am so hungry! anyone have any menus for a meal i can dive into and stuff my face and be full for more than an hour??? lunch,dinner..?
what about snacks.. the snacks they recommended were high in carbs and sugars!! at a level of 171,at the last blood draw,i dont know if i should be eating this..and want to know what other gestational diabetic moms eat so they arent so hungry!!?? i shouldve watched what i ate better, but with all my pregnancies i always ate pasta nd stuff.please help a lady out..

I am pregnant and a type one diabetic so I have to follow the same kind of menu. First off one banana is about 30 grams of carbs and drinking OJ and eating rice is awful. So I am confused as to why they would tell you this?

I eat a lot of veggies. Meat and eggs are good for you, as well as cheese. I limit my milk and juice intake as well. I do eat yogurt. Also I drink a lot of water as that helps to flush the sugar out of your system lowering you glucose.

Good luck
