I’m making a meal plan for my mom who has diabetes. What foods should I include?

My mom has diabetes and she hasn’t really been watching her diet like she should. She’s making really, really small baby steps and is finding it hard to stay away from sodas and processed meats. Please give me some easy meals to prepare for her. And also give me an idea of what foods she should be eating. I also notice that she often resorts to eating what’s convenient and quick. If you have quick meal ideas for diabetics that would be great too. Thanks.

For diabetics (and most people in general) they should focus on high protein and lots of fruits/veggies. Eat real food…natural fed meat, fruits/veggies. Get a george foreman and it is so easy to prepare meals. Brown rice is good too but takes a long time (just make a big batch and save in the fridge). Another easy ‘meal’ is whey protein shakes. All you need is a blender, some ice, skim milk or juice, peanut butter/banana or fruit, and of course whey protein).

Go to mercola.com and do a search on diabetes. Dr. Mercola is a little out there but a lot of his suggestions have merit.

what are some meal plans for a diabetic who won’t eat anything green?

My brother in law is planning to visit us for a week.He will not eat any food the color green and he is a diabetic. Breakfast and Lunch are figured out, it is a week of dinners I am having trouble planning.
I did not know that a diabetic could eat wheat tortillas and wheat pasta or about the yukongold potatoes. Thanks for that.
re:Spaghetti and meatballs. Wouldn’t that be too much starch?

My best friends husband is diabetic and you can make grilled chicken with yukongold potatoes (its a complex carb potato the only kind of white potatoes that people with DM can have), as well as red sauce (or gravy depending on what area you are from) with wheat pasta, Anything with pasta as long as it is wheat. Um as well as chicken fajitas as long as the tortilla is wheat, my friend’s husband eat fish a lot, pot roast, pretty much any meat is good, wheat pasta with grilled chicken in a Alfredo sauce. Check out some Diabetic websites. Take care and have a good visit with him.

What does a diabetic eat for breakfast? Husband just diagnosed, no meds needed, but need meal plan ideas.?

I’m guessing he is type two. He can have oatmeal (not instant), eggs, bacon, (low fat and low sodium) Fiber one dry cereal. He will have to learn how certain foods affect his blood sugar. No orange or other juices, too much carbs and sugar. Get a dietitian or nutritionist to help.

What is a healthy inexpensive meal plan for a diabetic?

Having diabetes doesn’t mean that you have to start eating special foods or follow a complicated diabetes diet plan. For most people, a diabetes diet simply translates into eating a variety of foods in moderate amounts and sticking to regular mealtimes.

This means choosing a diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Consistency also is key, because your body responds to excess calories and fat by creating an undesirable rise in blood sugar. Rather than a restrictive diet, a diabetes diet is a healthy-eating plan that’s naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories. In fact, it’s the best eating plan for everyone.

Planning your meals
Your meal plan is an eating guide that helps you:

Establish a routine for eating meals
Choose the healthiest foods in the right amounts at each meal
If you stick to your meal plan and watch your serving sizes, you’ll eat about the same amount of carbohydrates and calories every day. This helps control your blood sugar and your weight. On the flip side, the more you vary what you eat — especially the amount of carbohydrates — the harder it is to control your blood sugar.

If you’re already eating a variety of healthy foods, you may simply need to adjust portion sizes to keep your blood sugar (glucose) under control.

A dietitian can help
Ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietitian. A visit with a registered dietitian can provide you valuable information on how to change your eating habits and help you meet goals such as:

Controlling overeating
Making better food choices
Losing weight
A dietitian can help tailor your diet based on your health goals, tastes and lifestyle. You may need to follow a more deliberate plan — eating only a recommended number of servings from each food group every day.
