what reading on a random glucose blood test indicates diabetes?

Two or more random glucose blood tests with a reading of aproximately

196 or higher in the USA,

11.0 or higher in Canada

usually leads to a diagnosis of diabetes.

However, most doctors will not rely on this test. Instead they will do a fasting blood glucose test, and look for a reading of

126 or more in the USA,

or 7.0 or higher in Canada

An even more reliable test is the glucose tolerance test. You fast for 8 to 12 hours, (depending on the labs requirements). Your blood is drawn twice, once as a fasting level and once 2 hours after drinking a sugery drink. If your two hour test is over

196 in the USA or
11.0 in Canada

Then you probably have diabetes.

Another test used is the Hba1c, which shows your average blood glucose over the last three months.

These last two tests can tell your doctor a lot about how your body is handling carbs and sugar.

There are readings below these that indicate pre-diabetes, and the standards for diagnosing diabetes may change, as many doctors feel that these levels are too high, and the sooner you get diagnosed the better.

If you have pre-diabetes, or diabetes, take it very seriously. Educate yourself and take care of yourself.

You have to have more than one Fasting glucose level check to diagnose Diabetes.
Then it’s usually more than 110 or 120, depending on the lab.

A random test isn’t going to indicate diabetes. It is several tests in a row that will indicate it. It is also based on a blood test after 8-12 hours of fasting.

A random finger stick doesn’t indicate anything, no matter what the reading. In the US doctors take a close look at your A1c which basically gives them your average blood glucose level over the span of three months. That’s of greater importance.

In order to put stock in a random stick, you need to know how much you’ve eaten or when you’ve eaten last, but still can’t use that as an indication of diabetes unless a pattern of high sugar readings emerges.

Edit: be sure that you are careful what advice you follow, as US diabetics generally follow one type of measurement, and I am told that Canada and many European countries follow another, so if you’re looking for numbers, follow the ones that correspond to your country. (i.e. Benjamin is probably from somewhere other than the US, because those numbers in the US measurement would be basically nonexistent sugar. US 12 hour fasting levels are suggested to be between 70-110, with some doctors allowing up to 120 without concern)

Test are only an indicator not a diagnosis with 120 ish being good, however if you have an extremely high reading, say like 300-400 or higher I would be a bit concerned.
If you think you may have diabetes DO NOT FAST. Low levels of sugar for a diabetic are just as bad as high numbers. If you are a diabetic and fast you are putting yourself at risk of going into a diabetic coma.
I would take several random readings over say 5-7 days and go from there, or if you have real concerns right now go see your doctor!

Diabetes are metabolic dysfunction conditions. Glucose is the basic energy unit we use. The blood glucose level change according to the food we eat and the time we eat. it will varies from 4 mmol/ml to 13 mmol/ml. (you will have to check for this figures) Initial diagnostic with random glucose blood test may not indicates diabetes. It only reflect at that particular time flame, the tester have a high glucose level. However, if someone have a high blood glucose level, let say 13 mmol/ml after 4 hours of food intake (around 5 pm), it is probably a good ideal to seek further test. (check the glucose meter first!). Together with fasting glucose test, post-prandial glucose test and oral glucose tolerance test, the professional can diagnose whether it is diabetic, what stage it is in, and the strategy of treatment.

Between 80 and 120 is a normal blood sugar number for a normal person. Anything higher of lower should be checked out by a doctor.
