I thought I might have diabetes but my blood test in a general exam shows 72 mg glucose. Should I get tested?

I thought I might have some symptoms of diabetes: frequent yeast infections, frequent fatigue, advanced gum disease even though my gum doctor thought I was too young for that, anemia, and sometimes I get very tired after eating. I took an online test which said I had high risk for diabetes even though I eat a very good (high vegtable, fiber) diet, exercise regularly and have a good weight. I never took the specific test for diabetes but is my regular blood glucose level of 72 too normal for me to bother getting the specific test to diagnose diabetes?

Get a hemo A1C. This will tell you how you have been doing for the last 6 months. If it is bad, you have it.

If you are worried, get the test. It would put your mind at ease(also check for family history of diabetes.)

I don’t think that there is any rush for testing required. Your glucose level of 72 was a test for diabetes and your level is normal. Mention your concern to your doctor before you get your next physical exam.

Fasting lipid profile (Cholesterol)- Get your LDL (bad cholesterol) levels checked at least once a year. (Target: For diabetic patients-below 70 mg/dL. Others below 100 mg/dL). Triglycerides. (Target: Less than 150 mg/dL) Serum Cholesterol (Target: Less than 200 mg/dL) HDL (good cholesterol) (Target: More than 40 mg/dL)

A blood level of 72 is almost hypoglycemic or too little sugar. Typically, diabetes is marked by a blood sugar of 120 or above one hour after eating. Often times diabetics end up with low blood sugar due to careful diet, and medications, stress, and what they ate. Unless you were stressed out, or had a glass of wine an hour before, I’d say you were doing ok.

If you want to be sure, have your 01AC enzyme level checked. It’s probably ok.

Now, if you are diabetic, you are in the super low risk area, and don’t have to worry too much right now. If the blood glucose level goes up a lot, then you can start worrying.

Now, with such a low blood sugar, you could be producing too much insulin, which could be followed by either insulin resistance or the pancreas shutting down insulin generation. That might be at some point on your health horizon, but it is a ways off.

Bottom line: Don’t worry too much. Eat a healthy diet, but not too much. Don’t worry about the 01AC unless you have some very good alternate reasons to look at it.

Ok, just looking at your symptoms, have your thyroid and adrenals checked out. You could very well have a different endocrine disorder. The tired after eating part was a good clue for diabetes, but it also indicates other not so related problems. Also, take care of the anemia. That will keep you tired and unable to fight the infections.

Good luck. Take care, and look well beyond diabetes.

Nrormal blood sugar levels are from 60 -80. You are just fine. If you want to know something furthur suggest that the Dr draw a Hemoglobin A1c. this will show your glucose levels over the past 3-4 months.

72 is a good fasting sugar reading,

However how fast one digest sugar is also a variable so take a sugar tolerance test. You drink a lot of sugar water at the doctors office and by the clock they follow how long the body takes to get to normal

There is also an A1C blood test. A reading of 6 is normal – going higher than that to extreme life threatening readings of 13 can tell you an doctors a lot. This test measures your average reading over a 6 to 8 week average.

Your urine can also show if you spill sugar — means you can’t digest it in the blood with insulin and now your body chucks out the excess through your urine – you get a burning feeling.

Anyone can get high sugar readings – just eat a lot of sugar – stay fat and don’t exercises

Go get an A1C it will let you know your glucose levels for the past 3 months. Your glucose levels may be high but they might be low. 72 is good but you might actually be going lower during the day. While they are taking blood have them run a cvc test.
