Do I have diabetes? Is the blood glucose test included in regular blood work?
I am 15. In the last month, I have been feeling very tired-sleep 10-12 hrs/day. I am always thirsty and am hungry a lot. I also urinate frequently. At times, my urine smells sweet. Are these symptoms of type 1 or 2 diabetes? and I get blood work every 3 months. Is the blood glucose test included in the NORMAL ROUTINE blood work preformed by most doctors?
I get blood work done every three months because I have mild Crohn’s Disease. And I also am taking a medication that regulates my thyroid gland so I shouldn’t be this tired. And type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease just like crohn’s so I was just wondering if there was a chance I had diabetes!
Let me say this: You probably don’t have diabetes. A1cs, the blood test that shows your avg blood sugar level over the past 3 months, is generally included in your routine blood tests. Teens require more sleep than adults, and it’s completely normal to sleep, or want to sleep that much sometimes. Appetite also increases to fuel the body of a growing teen, and as you drink more, you have to pee more. I noticed you have a thyroid condition, and that could very well be the cause of your symptoms. Even on meds, you’re bound to have bad days, and sometimes even then, your medication can cause some sleepiness, although you may be more susceptible to the effects at different times. As a 15 year old, it is highly unlikely that you have diabetes, although it is not unheard of! I was diagnosed last year, soon after I turned 19. If you’re worried, it never hurts to ask your doctor. You see them often enough to easily get it under control if it so happens that you DO have it. Good luck!
Why do you get blood work done every three months?
There isn’t a NORMAL routine of blood worked performed. That’s why we need to know WHY you are getting blood work done.
You will know if you are tested for diabetes because it’s called a GTT or glucose tolerance test. It takes hours and you have to sit there and drink this cool-aide stuff and then get your blood drawn.
And yes, all of the symptoms you described can be symptoms of diabetes but more likely are normal and you are just hyper-aware of this stuff for some reason.

First off yes Blood glucose is taken in normal blood work, however if you had not eaten for at least 4 hours before a Normal blood test it may not show a problem. You need to ask for a diabetic blood work up.As to the type of diabetes only testing and proper eating habits will help you find out which you have.Your symptoms could also be a reaction to the medication your taking that requires you to be tested every 3 months.

Blood sugar readings are NOT part of the normal tests for Crohn’s Disease. If the doctor knows or thinks your are diabetic, he will do the necessary blood tests.
You should ask your doctor do to the blood tests, just to be on the safe side. Your reasoning about autoimmune diseases could be correct.
There is a very simple test that can be done called A1C. This test measures the AVERAGE of your blood sugar levels over the last 90 days. because it is an average reading, it is more accurate than the "finger stick" readings, and produces less "false positive" and "false negative" readings.
The symptoms of Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the same. It is the CAUSE that is different. Diabetes canNOT be diagnosed from symptoms alone — blood tests are required.
Discuss your symptoms with your doctor, and ask him to do the necessary tests.

When one has one of the endocrine problems the doctors usually include testing for all of them. If your blood draw is for CBC or Complete Blood Count it includes the HbA1c test as well.
Have your mother get a copy of all your blood test results for you to keep in a notebook. This will help you to understand where your numbers on all your problems are going. You can even use your word processor program to make a chart of these to compare them and see if you are doing all you can to control what you can control.
Congratulations on your interest in keeping yourself as healthy as possible. I do wish more kids would take as much interest and watch what is happening.
If you are still tired you might need a different thyroid med? Some of my friends are thyroid challenged and have found that being proactive in their treatments has improved the quality of life for them.
