where do i find a good diabetic diet? one that is livable, not starving.?
my doctor has me on a 1200 calorie / carb diet, and exercise. i’m starved all the time, and it makes me sneek food while my family is asleep. they have been great helping with cooking healthy meals, and supporting me by eating the same as i, and they don’t bring home fast foods, junk food, etc. they have been great. it’s just 1200 cal/carb diet for someone who is 44, and large just isn’t enough. please give me serious help, sarcasom sets me off in to depression. i’m reaching out to you.
Oh dear! 1200 calories is not much to live on. Your doctor must think you really need to lose weight fast. How long have you been on this diet? Sometimes it takes a while to get adjusted to smaller amounts of food.
My husband and I are both diabetic. The doctor has put him on a 2000 calories diet. He still stays hungry all the time. He gets plenty of food on this diet, but he has that diabetic crave. He just tries to stay as busy as he can to keep food off his mind.
Did your doctor send you to a dietitian? If he didn’t you need to ask him to. A dietitan can plan a diet that is just right for you, Knowing what to eat and how much sometimes goes a long way in helping a diabetic reach goals. Some people eat three regular meals a day and some need to eat six small meals a day. It really depends on the person and their health problems.
Our dietition gave my husband 5 carbs at a meal and me, four. We have a small portion of protein, 100% wholewheat bread, 1 small fruit, 1 cup 1% milk, 1/2 cup starchy vegetable, such as corn or potatoes. Plus, we get a small side salad and 2 tablespoons of light dressing. For my husband’s fifth carb, he can have 1/2 cup of Jello with just a dab of light Cool Whip or 3 sugar free cookies.
I know the struggles that you are going through, but don’t give up! Diabetes is a life long struggle with all the complications that come with it. My husband has struggled everyday for about 18 years. Because of his out of control blood sugars, he now has stage three renal failure, high blood pressure, very bad diabetic foot pain, coronary heart disease, had a stent put in. Since he found out about his kidneys failing, he has gotten very serious about his diet and keeping his blood sugar under control. He has lost 60lbs. in less than a year.
I would suggest that you talk with your doctor about you staying hungry all the time. Maybe he could increase your calories.
I wish you the very best, I feel for all diabetics, and every time I see someone asking a question on Yahoo Answers about diabetes, I say a prayer for that person and try to help answer their question.
I don’t know if this has helped or not, but please take care of yourself. You can take comfort in knowing that many, many diabetics are struggling just like you. We understand.

Diabetic Diet
by
Kendra Blanchette, RD, CDE
The energy that we get from foods, measured in calories, comes from three types of nutrients: fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Any food that provides calories will raise blood sugar. When foods are digested, they are broken down into the body’s basic fuel– glucose, a type of sugar. The glucose is absorbed by the bloodstream, and is then known as blood glucose or blood sugar. In a person without diabetes, insulin is released by the pancreas after a meal or snack to allow the glucose in the blood to get into the body’s cells, where it is burned for energy. This brings the level of glucose in the blood back down to the normal range. If insulin is not produced or is not working properly, the glucose can not enter the cells to be used, and it builds up in the bloodstream. This results in high blood sugar, and this condition is known as diabetes.
Although all foods that provide calories are converted into glucose by the body, certain nutrients have a more direct effect on the blood’s glucose level. Fats in foods are eventually digested and converted into glucose, but this can take up to 6 to 8 or more hours after a meal, and the release of glucose into the blood is very slow … Protein in foods (such as meats, poultry, fish, eggs, soy and other beans, and milk) takes about 3 to 4 hours after a meal to "show up" as blood glucose.
Carbohydrates, on the other hand, take only about half an hour to an hour after a meal to be turned into blood glucose.
Any food that is high in any type of carbohydrate will raise blood glucose levels. Foods high in carbohydrates include starches such as rice, pasta, breads, cereals, and similar foods.
The goal is to provide a mixture of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins at each meal at an appropriate calorie level to both provide essential nutrients as well as create an even release of glucose into the blood.

I think you should talk to your doctor and tell him how you are feeling and what you are doing. Maybe he can alter your eating plan. 1200 does seem a bit low calorie wise to me. Is he having you try to lose some weight? If so, maybe it is temporary. Talk to him again before you try anything else! Good luck and keep trying.

Hi babe!!! check out a book from the library called Atkins Diabetes Revolution and read it!!! You will find most of the answers to your question there.
Contrary to most popular opinion ATKINS did not encourage people to eat a really high fat diet. He only encouraged them to eat a sufficient protein and fat diet with very low carb count.
It really works!!! I have been eating this way for 10 years. I keep my glucose levels in check, my blood pressure and cholesterol is in proper levels, and the best part is I am NEVER hungry.

I agree with you 100% .
1200 calories is a super model sized diet.
I hate it when they do that to me.
Talk to your dietitian and tell her this isn’t acceptable.
Try adding a huge salad or grilled or roasted veggies to your lunch and dinner.
You can also try some clear soup prior to meals- something like Miso or any light choices[ watch out for cream soups ]
Move on up to 2400 calories and see if that helps ?
Your diet will never work if you have to sneak around and not make the right choices.
I have the same problems and I know how you feel.
Good luck.
